An Introduction to Soil-Free (Hydroponic) Growing

Soil isn't actually what plants need — it's just one way to deliver what they need. Hydroponics delivers it directly.

Plants don't need soil. They need water, dissolved nutrients, oxygen at the root zone, and support to stay upright — soil happens to provide all four, but it's not the only way to do it. Hydroponic growing delivers the same inputs directly, through a nutrient solution instead of dirt.

Why it pairs naturally with a greenhouse

Hydroponic systems need a stable, controlled environment to perform well — consistent temperature, protection from wind and rain diluting nutrient solution, and reliable light. That's precisely what a greenhouse already provides, which is why the two show up together so often once growers move past their first season or two.

The practical upside

Hydroponic systems typically use a fraction of the water of soil growing (it's recirculated, not lost to drainage and evaporation), and many growers see faster growth and higher yield per square foot, since roots aren't spending energy searching through soil for nutrients that are just handed to them directly.

Starting small: what that actually looks like

You don't need to convert an entire greenhouse on day one. Most growers start with a single small system — a few net pots in a simple deep-water-culture bucket setup, tucked into a corner alongside conventional soil beds — and expand from there once they've got a feel for nutrient management.

What it doesn't replace

Hydroponics is excellent for leafy greens, herbs, and many fruiting crops, but it's not a wholesale replacement for soil growing — root vegetables in particular are still better suited to a bed. Most diversified home setups end up running both side by side, which is exactly the direction we think this is all headed.
